intentioned in hiring the Thirds to play this engagement. They hoped to keep people around after the big show. But we should have seen this coming. I like to think the hugely inflated drink prices worked against us, but just the same…our little coffee house sound didn't keep a single person there as the place almost completely emptied after the headliners exited. Ouch.

3. Rocket 88 at the Buffalo Boathouse near Crystal Beach, Ontario, Canada, June 1994. This area landmark has since burned down. I do not shed a tear.
After being held up for hours at the Peace Bridge Customs, they finally let us proceed after one of the event organizers came through with a security deposit. Of course he had to actually come to the bridge with real money. They finally let us through, and we arrived
at our destination. I had been warned that the load-in was a bit difficult. I did not listen.
As it turned out, the load-in entailed navigating a journey of about 50 yards down a
narrow rickety pier with tons of equipment and then up a flight of stairs or two,
and around here and there, then move this out of the way, etc. I was starting to
have doubts this gig was even worth it. No real problem (yet). It was a beautiful
summer early evening. We'll find a way to have some fun. Rocket 88 had come
to play.
Well the 'party' was a total bomb. There was only a tiny handful of guests
all evening. And those that were there seemed to view the band as a
bunch of imposing noisemakers. We had been paid through an agency
in advance for our 3 one-hour sets, so there was no getting out of the
complete performance. They insisted the imposing...
