| Saint Teresa's Boys' Choir Favorite Story
From: Charlie O’Neill I was a choirboy from about grade 5 through 8th grade graduation. I went to World's fair the first time the choir went and sang on the 'Spirit of Christmas' recording. I attended all, or most, of the never ending rehearsals after school. I often accompanied Father Leo on small choir gigs to far flung places like the East Otto storefront church and the Club Como for barbershop harmonies. This 'small choir' also was featured in the Spring Concert series and other special events. Singing songs like "Greenfields' ,'Time Me Kangaroo Down Sport", 'Billy Boy' and 'Coming through the Rye'. While this 'small choir', which the members dubbed 'The Mooses' had it's practical side I really feel like Father Leo was able to direct the choir dynamic very effectively by placing the older potentially subversive 'Mooses" into a constructive entity. Give us more responsibility and ...well, opportunities to screw up... #1. Sister Richard's Morning Announcement Microphone The Mooses were assigned the opening spot on the daily announcements in Sister Mary Richard's office to sing 'Veni Veni Emmanuelle to the entire school for the duration of Advent. Sister Richard showed great respect but poor judgment by leaving us alone in her office, to turn the mic on, sing the song, turn the mic off. That's all we had to do. Our vocal cue guy, Joe Faulkner, started us about a perfect fifth too low for some of our little prepubescent grade school voices (Joe already had his high school voice). After enjoying so much success and adoration at the local level, it was a shock to hear how badly we blew this song. Out of tune, words bumping into... |
