| Equipment, supplies and other ideas: Along with a good sounding, easy-to-play six string electric or acoustic guitar, I suggest students consider setting up a dedicated practice area at home consisting of a music stand and a guitar stand. A mechanical timekeeper such as a metronome or a keyboard with programmed drumbeats is an essential item to develop a steady sense of rhythm. For those people who are equipped with a PC, an amazing array of software and Internet sites can really keep an active student very busy and informed. A CD player, a tuner, extra strings, picks, a capo and batteries are a great idea. When you get home from lessons, take your instrument out of its case and get yourself set up for a week of playing and practicing. Seek out musical situations and musical people to associate with. Consider ‘time’ to be an essential supply item, and budget as much as you can afford. Beginner Level: If you practice at least a half hour daily, and your practice habits consist of material I suggest, beginner guitar usually lasts about four to six months. To prepare for lessons at Charlie O’Neill’s Guitar Shop, purchase a copy of the “Gang of 15 Workout” CD online through our contact page or at Al Hemer Music Store 4190 North Buffalo Street. Orchard Park NY. Secure a folder for loose papers. Purchase a Guitar Method book (I will discuss which one with you). The Guitar Poster, The Guitar Handbook and Guitar Player Magazine are good choices for reference and recreational reading. How much you prepare and how aggressive you are about your approach to learning are up to you. |
