| About our Director…. Monsignor Leo F. McCarthy was born November 19, 1932 the eighth child in a family of twelve, the son of Verna and Daniel. He attended grammar school in Spring Brook, NY prior to settling in Alden, NY. Young Leo knew from a very early age that his calling was to be a Priest, so he enrolled in the Buffalo Little Seminary where he studied for four years of high school and two years of college. From there, Monsignor's studies took him to St. Bonaventure University, staying for six years studying Theology for four years and Philosophy for two. In 1959 Leo became Father Leo McCarthy, being ordained by Bishop Burke. The new Priest's first assignment was in Little Valley, prior to being transferred to Saint Teresa's Parish in South Buffalo in 1960 for a 'temporary assignment' father Leo went about his business displaying his various natural talents with the school children and their activities. It wasn't long before the much-loved head of the Parish, Monsignor Leo Toomey took a liking to Father McCarthy and having some pull with the Bishop, has his 'temporary assignment' changed to permanent. Father Leo accepted the change and was appointed Director of Youth Activities for the Parish. Father Leo, at age 27, dove right into his duties with endless energy. He established two Tyro Football teams, he built up an army of 200 alter boys, and formed a boys' choir (inspired by the 'Father Flanagan's Boys' Town choir' and his own participation in choirs).
