1. The Original Thirds Finale at Nietzsche's on Allen St. in Buffalo, NY., Sunday, August 24, 1986. The original Thirds consisted of Joe Head, Jim Brucato and myself. We had a great run of regular Thursday nights at Nietzsche's for years. When bassist Jim Brucato announced he wanted to move to Boston Mass., we decided to put this version of the band to bed for a while. We selected Sunday night for this show and started early. By one hour into the show, we had to pack up the front stage where we usually played, and move to the big stage in back because of the overflow crowd. The Thirds were the first band to play at this essential Buffalo music club when it opened a few years before, so we've always had a soft spot in our collective hearts for this "comfortable shoe" of a music club. Apparently the listening crowd felt the same toward us. At some point in the evening we broke a Nietzsche's attendance record as friends, fellow musicians and regular Thirds fans showed up
in droves to bid farewell to this beloved version of the band. And did I mention an
extremely pregnant person, my wife, Diane, was there too?

After the band performed a blues tune aptly titled 'Drop Down Momma', Diane
headed home alone. This was around 11 PM. With no end in sight for the
musical portion of the evening, the band and all our guests played on.
Now the prevailing theory is that the resonating bass sounds were to
blame, but drop down Diane did. Her water broke on the way home
from Nietzsche's. I got the call to head to Buffalo General Hospital
STAT. Reeking of beer, cigarette smoke and sweaty good times, I
figured to pace the waiting room until the big moment came.
